Why You Should Support Small Businesses

Did you know that you can accomplish multiple good things at once—for others, the planet, and yourself—when you “shop small”? Here’s why you should shop local and support small business owners whenever possible:

  • Support the economies of places you love. Between the pandemic and the increasing frequency of natural disasters worldwide, it’s easy to see how fragile any community can be. You can strengthen the economy and resilience of the place you call home, as well as places you frequently visit, by spending your consumer dollars at locally owned businesses. This helps entrepreneurs to not only keep the lights on, but grow, create more jobs, and make more investments in the communities you love most.

  • Find unique items that truly express your style. National chain stores stock the same or similar items in every location, so your purchases at these will be identical to those of countless other Americans. Conversely, small businesses and boutique shops typically sell less mass-produced merchandise and more specialty goods from small-scale artists, designers, and manufacturers. This means that when you find that special “you” item, you’ll really stand out.

  • Reduce carbon emissions and slow global warming. Because transportation accounts for the largest amount of greenhouse gas emissions in the US—and since these are directly responsible for global warming—reducing your driving time and the trips shipping trucks make can really help the planet. Try to combine errands in a single location as much as possible. Consider purchasing from online sellers that offset their carbon footprints, and consolidate purchases into as few delivery orders as you can.

  • Keep vintage treasures out of landfills. When you shop at consignment and thrift stores, you can often find high-quality items in excellent condition. The construction of goods from previous eras is frequently superior to the mass-produced or fast fashion merchandise available today. By purchasing these things, you’re extending their useful life—and reducing waste by keeping them out of landfills.

  • Enjoy the experience more. You already have plenty of “chore” shopping on your to-do list. So when it comes to purchasing clothing, gifts, and things that spark joy, why not make the process a little more fun? Boutiques and other small shops offer an experience you won’t get at “big box” stores: intriguing displays, fresh styles, attentive service, friendly conversation, and the chance to discover the unexpected.
