The Farmers Insurance Open is This Week! Here’s How to Plan Your Day so It’s a Hole-in-One
The Farmers Insurance Open is San Diego's most prestigious PGA TOUR event, and it makes its home at beautiful Torrey Pines Golf Course. Neighboring our Del Mar Village, we’ve welcomed the big tournament for more than 60 years and have some experience in planning the perfect day around the four days of gameplay—this year, Jan. 24-27.This year’s event is truly exciting. Tiger Woods will make his 2019 debut and Rory McIlroy will play in the first Farmers Insurance Open of his career. They’ll be joined by PGA heavyweights Jason Day, Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, and Xander Schauffele.Of course, the world-class competition isn’t the only thing to experience. From breakfast to late night drinks—all complete with beautiful ocean views—we’ve got your day in Del Mar covered.
Pre-Game
Gates open fairly early, so if you want to be on the course for tee off, get an early start on the day. Begin with a quick, hearty, and healthful breakfast in the Village.
Stratford Court Café opens at 7:00 a.m., so you’ll have more than enough time to grab something to eat before heading to Torrey. The Ultimate Bagel (an open-faced toasted bagel with cream cheese, avocado, tomato, bacon, and arugula) or the Acai Bowl (with hemp granola and topped with fresh strawberries, blueberries, bananas, and coconut) are quick eats that will keep you full for at least nine holes.
If you happen to be staying at L’Auberge for the tournament, then you can swing by Coastline before heading out for the day. The restaurant opens at 6:30 a.m. and serves mouthwatering dishes like Cinnamon Roll Waffles, Del Mar Eggs Benedict, and Short Rib Polenta (which consists of poached eggs, short rib, Swiss chard, arrabbiata, and parmesan).
Americana is known for its hearty American breakfast dishes. Get a table at 7:00 a.m. when the restaurant opens and try a local favorite such as the Del Mar Powerhouse Breakfast or Bernadino’s Huevos Rancheros.
If you just want something quick before hitting the green, stop by Elixir Juice & Food. The shop opens at 7:00 a.m., which leaves you with plenty of time to grab a cold pressed juice to go, like the Cali Greens (made with celery, cucumber, kale, spinach, lemon, and ginger). Or, opt for a fresh bowl—the Dragon Bowl (with a blend of orange juice, dragon fruit, mango, pineapple, and banana) is a favorite.
Tee Off
On Thursday and Friday, the gates open at 8:00 a.m.; Saturday and Sunday require an earlier start, with gates opening at 7:30 a.m. For each day of play, tee time begins an hour later.Keep in mind that you’ll have to pass through security before hitting the course. You can find a list of approved and prohibited items here.Throughout the week, the hospitality venues open at 9:30 a.m., and beverage service begins at 10:00 a.m. (and stays open until the last putt drops on the 18th green). There is also a buffet luncheon at 11:00 a.m. and snacks at 2:30 p.m.
After Play
Fun doesn’t have to end when play does. Harrah’s Resort SoCal will be hosting The Post Party on the 15th green at The Fringe Thursday through Saturday. The high-energy party will begin at approximately 3:30 p.m.—once the last group has played through the 15th hole.
After the After Play
After a day on the green—even with snacks and drinks to keep you satisfied—you’ve probably worked up an appetite. Shuttle service from Torrey Pines Golf Course ends just before 6:00 p.m. each day of play, which gets you back to your car and into the Del Mar Village just in time for dinner.From Chinese to Italian cuisine and fresh seafood to a cold beer, the Village has a restaurant to suit everyone’s craving. You can take in a colorful sunset sky with an ocean view table at Jake’s Del Mar, Poseidon Restaurant, or Pacifica Del Mar.
