Get to know Weatherly Asset Management: Carolyn Taylor, President, Founding Partner

Tell us your backstory: What was your path to owning a business in Del Mar Village? Did you grow up here? Why did you choose Del Mar Village to set up shop?

I was born and raised in Santa Cruz, CA and graduated from Stanford University before heading east to begin my career as an investment banker for Dean Witter Reynolds in New York. After returning to California briefly to work for Payden & Rygel Investment Counsel in Los Angeles, I went back to New York as a portfolio manager for Neuberger & Berman on Wall Street.

While juggling our careers and starting a family, my husband, Bill, and I knew we eventually wanted to plant roots in Southern California. We picked Del Mar for its proximity to the ocean, world class hospitals and education, lifelong friends, and quaint community. I launched Weatherly in 1994 on the 101 in Del Mar to lead and grow a boutique financial services and investment management business that allowed me to positively impact the community while simultaneously raising our four children.

Tell us about your business. What should people know about it? What makes it unique?

What is one product or service you are most known for or is particularly special to you?

We custom build client portfolios and do not use industry standard “model portfolios.” Each client we work with has a unique set of financial and life goals and we want to ensure their portfolios and planning speak to those objectives. Each portfolio is individually managed with an emphasis on long-term wealth accumulation and after-tax returns.

We have a high caliber team that is able to provide value for our clients in all aspects of their financial lives and have the privilege of custom curating their areas of focus as they grow with us year over year.

Tell us one fun fact about your business most people don't know.

#1 – I used to longboard from my house to the office every day for work.

#2 – Weatherly was named after the 1962 America's Cup sailboat; my husband and I love to sail.

What do you love about Del Mar Village?

I love feeling and seeing the strong sense of community and care for our shared neighborhood. To see how much Del Mar has grown and evolved over the years while simultaneously remaining the same quaint place we all know and love. Whether that is the village’s increasingly impressive restaurant selection, summer music events, or year-round beach activities, my favorite weekends involve my adult kids coming back home to visit and spending the weekend eating and exercising.

How would you spend the perfect day in Del Mar? Where would you go? What would you eat or do?

My perfect Friday would be to wake up early, enjoy a cup of coffee, and head into the office to take care of business with my team. After work I enjoy meeting up friends to swim to the buoy in the summertime or walk to Flat Rock at Torrey Pines State Beach if it’s wintertime. I always say my favorite restaurant in Del Mar is a home cooked meal at our family friends’ home on 15th Street. Walking down to the bluffs on 6th Street to see the sunset with a glass of wine or cup of tea before heading to their home for dinner would be the perfect ending to my ideal day.

Thank you, Carolyn!
