Terri Colachis and her husband, Gus, live in Del Mar and are the parents of six children. Their daughter, Shea, was diagnosed with autism at 18 months old. This personal experience inspired Terri to dedicate her life to advocate for not only her daughter but the many families in similar situations.Terri was recently honored as the 2017 Woman of the Year for the 77th Assembly District in recognition of her dedication and volunteer work to benefit the developmentally disabled children in the community. The Woman of the Year honor is part of the State Assembly’s efforts to celebrate California’s extraordinary women. We asked Terri what her recipe would be for a perfect Mother’s Day.The ideal Mother’s Day for me would be a day that combines some pampering and rejuvenation time for myself along with getting together with my kids and husband.

Walk or hike

My favorite exercise is power walking or hiking. I love walking through the Village from end to end or getting out on the sand and walking along the water. I like to take the trails up and down the bluffs like at the Scripps Bluff Preserve to get my heart rate up and take in the view. The great thing about walking and hiking is that when you do it with a friend or a member of the family, you can give each other your full and uninterrupted attention and talk in a way we often don’t get to during our hectic lives.

Take in the view and share some wine

There is nothing like sharing conversation over a great glass of wine. My husband and I are passionate about wine and our daughter Kylie is a sommelier. So, relaxing together with wine is a family tradition. Del Mar offers so many restaurants with great wine lists and ample options offered by the glass. Sometimes we like to go out early and beat the dinner crowds. We sample appetizers over a shared bottle of wine and take in the views that make Del Mar so special.

Make time for pampering

On Mother’s Day I don’t feel guilty carving out some time just for me. I really enjoy getting a massage to relax and have my sore and tight muscles worked on. I am a fan of Spa L’Auberge for lots of reasons but, its proximity to the water adds to the relaxing environment.I have been taking my daughters with me to get manicures and pedicures since they were little girls. Today, it continues to be a fun girly thing for us to do together. Del Mar Nails and Spa in the Del Mar Plaza has recently installed the latest in spa chairs and is one of the most comfortable places to pamper your hands and feet.

Flowers are never a bad idea

It may not be an original idea, but it's still a good one. The gift of some beautiful flowers never fails to make me smile and is always appreciated.

Brunch

Taking mom out for brunch on Mother’s Day may be the single most popular way to celebrate. We are so lucky to live in Del Mar where there are so many good choices including Il Fornaio, Sbicca and Pacifica; many of which offer spectacular views or settings.Whatever you decide is just right for the mom in your life on May 13, make sure to plan ahead and then be present in the moment with her. That is what she really wants most of all.
